The Dublin Transportation Initiative recommends 2 further bridges to cross the Liffey, one east and one west of O’Connell Bridge.

Dublin Corporation publish a framework document for the economic and social regeneration of the Blackhall Place environs. A new bridge is considered fundamental to the success of the plan.

The Environmental Impact Statement considers the visual and construction effects of three bridge types on the quays.

Engineer and architect, Santiago Calatrava, submits a Design Proposal for the bridge.

Building commences in March.

On the 13th and 19th of October, the prefabricated inclined arches are lowered onto the bridge deck in a precision operation.

June 16th, Bloomsday, the James Joyce Bridge is officially opened.
